Kinesiology and food allergy testing for adults and children

Kinesiology and Allergy Testing

Kinesiology comes from the Greek work 'kinesis' meaning motion, and is known as the study of movement. It has been used as a diagnostic tool since 1964, when Dr George Goodheart, an American chiropractor, discovered that he could determine more about a patient's health by testing their muscles than by any other independent type of diagnosis.

He developed some muscle tests that enabled him to learn about the health of the whole body. This system is used to detect and rectify functional imbalances before they develop into disease, and to identify specific sensitivities and allergies to foodstuffs or food products. Kinesiology tests are becoming particularly useful recently for pinpointing sensitivities or allergies to food ingredients for children.

How does it work?

Kinesiology is a combination of Western technology and the oriental principles of energy flow, which say that each of the major organs and systems of the body is fuelled by an internal channel of energy called a meridian. These channels work together to form an energy network that powers the mind, all the major functions, organs and muscles of the body.

When we are healthy, energy flows freely through these channels, but blocked energy can lead to weakness in the corresponding organ and will affect the muscle that relates to that organ.

What happens in a consultation?

A first appointment lasts about an hour. The session begins with a detailed consultation. This background information enables the practitioner to build a picture of you and possible causes of your problem.

The practitioner would hold your arm or leg to isolate the muscle that he wants to test. He would then touch a point on your body, which is linked to a meridian to that particular muscle, while quickly and gently pressing down on the limb. Any imbalances become apparent very quickly because you cannot resist even a gentle pressure on your limb.

How many sessions do I need?

Many people can be given a clear diagnosis or feel a marked effect after a single session of kinesiology, but some tend to need several treatments. However, if you are feeling no improvement after three to six visits, it is unlikely that this therapy is working for you.

For the purposes of food allergy or food sensitivity testing, a single session is sufficient to arrive at a list of food products which are causing adverse reactions in your body.

Which problems can it help?

Kinesiology is not a 'cure' for any problem. It is concerned with finding and correcting minor problems before they become a major illness. It addresses many niggling little health problems that cannot be diagnosed or named because they are only precursors to illnesses. Food sensitivities and allergies, digestive problems, any joint stiffness, most aches and pains, headaches, backache and phobias can all be identified and to some extent relieved by kinesiology.

Is it safe?

Kinesiology is a gentle non-invasive therapy with no side-effects. It is perfectly safe for people of all ages and states of health, even babies and pregnant women.
